Things that make you say 'hmm....'

My mom sent me this email and we couldn't decide if this was real or not....only because, if you knew my mother (and grandmother and great-grandmother for that matter) it wouldn't be shocking! You decide! (is this a flash-forward of my life in a few years? poor Jeremy!)

I remember the check you were talking about.....you won't believe what happened! I thought I told you.....I had the check on the counter for Dad to take to the bank and cash - my coffee spilled all over it (my first cup of the day!), so I was holding it over a candle to dry it off and wouldn't you know, it caught on fire ~ I dropped the flaming check on the floor to stomp out the fire ~ then it stuck to the bottom of my shoe and my shoe caught on fire ~ so I ran out of the house because by this time my pant leg was on FIRE!!!! ~ I was running around the yard like a 'crazy' lady ~ I must have been such a sight because cars driving past stopped to gawk, of course causing a traffic pile up and stopping traffic in both directions ~ then the police and ambulances came, luckily no was seriously injured! By this time I WAS UNDER CONTROL and in the house making another cup of coffee (since I never got my first cup!) when there was a knock at the door ~ a police officer about the traffic incident.....THEY WANTED TO BLAME ME!!!!! FOR BEING A DISTRACTION TO THE DRIVERS!!!! but I said OH NO, if you want to blame any one, blame JEREMY!!! because I told him not to give me a check for the ticket and then I had to explain the annual girl's weekend to Officer Joe-I showed him pictures, of this year and our previous weekends, and encouraged him to encourage his wife and daughters to do the same ~ SO, he asked for the check as evidence - it was charred and in pieces so we taped it together the best we could ~ I made a photo copy of it .... because I knew you wouldn't believe me..... anyway ~ if you get a call from Officer Joe that is the reason! Let me know if I can help you with this situation in any way!

Labor Day

For Labor Day, we spent a long weekend at a really nice resort in Brian Head, UT. It's mostly known for being a ski resort area, but in the summer they turn the slopes into mountain biking trails and use the ski lifts for sightseeing at the top of Brian Head. It was beautiful! (and cold - it was good that all the rooms had fireplaces!)

We got in Friday night and then spent Saturday visiting Bryce Canyon. On the way we checked out Mammoth Caves and went through Red Canyon. On Sunday, we stayed in Brian Head and did some sightseeing, swam at the hotel, played some games, and had awesome dessert via room service! On our drive home, we went through Kolob Canyon which is the most northwest area of Zion Natl Park. Even though we saw a lot of beautiful areas in Bryce Canyon, Zion is still very much my favorite. That night we had a labor day picnic and smores...yum:)

MDA Volunteering

Yesterday, we, along with group of Creech people helped out with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) lock-up fundraiser. The preselected (and consenting) jailbirds (most of them were the execs of the casinos!) were picked up from work by the arresting officers and dropped off at 'prison' (Bahama Breeze restaurant) where they were signed in and got mug shots taken. While they were in 'jail', they called friends/family/buisnesses (whoever they could) to bring in donations. The only way they were 'released' was when they collected $2400. While they were waiting for their donations to arrive, they had great food, cake, snow cones, drinks and Edible Arrangements with a white chocolate fountain. They could also get a free massage! (so could the volunteers!)

When we arrived, the person in charged asked Jeremy if he was an outgoing and 'peppy' person...and he said yes! Then she asked me, and I said, 'um...not really and neither is he!' So...I was assigned to registration and Jeremy was asked to be one of the penguins walking around the restaurant! hahaha!

The funny part was when I was at the registration table, everyone thought I was in charge! I had people come ask me if they could take a break or use the bathroom and where was 'xyz', etc.

One of the jailbirds was talking to me about how well his company worked with the MDA and did I know so-and-so, and when were we planning the next committee meeting, etc. So, rather than telling him I had no idea what he was talking about or that I wasn't part of the comittee, I just agreed with him and made it sound like I knew exactly what he was talking about!

So, if the shoe fits....(and we all know how much I love new shoes!)

Visits

Our friends Andy and Angie Hartman and Eric and Julianne Payne came through Vegas on their vacation to California in July. We met them for dinner downtown - it was so great to see them! I can't wait to visit again in December. Angie is one of my best friends from PSU and we were in each other's weddings in 2006.

Our friend Carrie New aslo came through on buisness in August - she has an awesome job! She'll pick a base to go to and show up to explain and promote new equipment for the Air Force. She's done a lot of traveling! We're looking forward to seeing her again in September, too. Carrie and I were each other's first friends we met at PSU when we lived on the same floor freshman year. Jeremy was her AFROTC mentor. She probably gets the credit for me and Jeremy becoming 'me and Jeremy'.

Blow Darts

If you're on Facebook, you probably saw both my, Katie, and Michael's profile status with news links like this or this interview Katie had with 3 local news stations at home regarding her getting shot in the back with a 4 inch-long blow dart!

She and her friend, Kelly, were riding their bikes training for their upcoming sprint triathalon when Kelly noticed the dart sticking out of Katie's back! When someone sent Katie a link regarding the same issue with another bicyclist from the day before, she reported it to the police and scheduled a blood test next week to make sure it was clean.
Since she reported it, Katie was interviewed with 3 local news stations and was in the paper. And since those were aired, 2 more people came out saying the same thing happened to them within 2 days of Katie's report. Hopefully the dart people will be caught soon!

ps - Katie and Kelly did GREAT on their triathalon! Way to go!

Girls' Weekend!

I flew home (on the Red-eye flight...in first class! Thanks to Mom for letting me use her frequent flyer miles!) Thursday night and Mom and Katie picked me up at the airport for our Annual Girls' Weekend. This year we went to Cape May, NJ and had a great time! We've already planned on staying there again next year. We went to the pool and beach (of course, the only souvenir I brought home was a bad sunburn!), rented bikes, and just enjoyed the beach! It made me realized how much I miss being close to the beach - Lake Mead doesn't cut it! Thanks for a great trip girls - can't wait for next year!
